CHAMBĀ, bHARMOUR, LIFE

Welcome to View on the Irāvatī, a personal blog about adventure, culture, and acclimation for an American chāchī living in the Chambā District of Himachal Pradesh, India.

In Sanskrit, philosophy is known as “darśana,” which means “view, vision, or perspective.” This is a modern perspective on the past and present, in the lands of an ancient Himalayan kingdom traversed by the Rāvī River, once known as the Irāvatī – “she who grants refreshment.”

This is Nandi, Shiva’s bull, from the Chaurasi mandir (temple) in Bharmour. He was sculpted by a royal artisan, Gugga, who crafted several outstanding murtis (icons) during the 7th century that can be found throughout Chambā.
